Skiing: Montgomery’s Sixth Individual Title Lifts Summit to Narrow Team State Championship
VAIL – Seth Montgomery added to his laurels as one of the most accomplished skiers in Colorado High School history, adding his sixth individual title in three seasons while leading Summit to a narrow state championship in Boys Alpine skiing on Thursday at the Vail Ski Resort.
Montgomery earned his third straight slalom state championship and combined with Wednesday’s giant slalom victory, he has won both the giant slalom and slalom for each of the past three seasons. His six individual Alpine titles are double what any other Colorado high school skier has accomplished in records dating to 2014.
Meanwhile, Summit compiled a two-event team score of 319 points to narrowly edge second-place Steamboat Springs (315) and third-place Middle Park (309). It’s Summit’s 24th skiing state championship and first in Alpine – Alpine and Nordic were split into separate state championships last year.
Montgomery had a combined time of 1 minute, 10.11 seconds in posting the two fastest times of the day, a 35.04-second first run and a 35.07 second run.
As in Wednesday’s giant slalom, Joshua Stephen of Aspen was second. His combined time was 1:11.05.
The rest of the top 10 was: sophomore Soren Shepherd of Steamboat Springs (third, 1:12.23); senior Alek Guziur of Middle Park (fourth, 1:14.24); senior Salvado Stokeld of Middle Park (fifth, 1:16.22); junior Ryder Lanning of Nederland (sixth, 1:16.43); senior Gabriel Hychalk of Battle Mountain (seventh, 1:18.05); sophomore Keagan Austin of Steamboat Springs (eighth, 1:19.19); senior Jimmy Stokes of Aspen (ninth, 1:19.52); and senior Corbin Horrocks of Durango (10th, 1:21.48).
The Nordic State Championships are Friday and Saturday at Snow Mountain Ranch near Granby.
